Barangay Sto. Niño, located in San Vicente Palawan, has a unique history and significance within the local community. Originally, it was a Sitio of Barangay Alimanguan and was known as “Irawan,” a term that referred to a long period of the dry season. However, in 1980, the residents of Irawan decided to petition the Barangay Government of Alimanguan for their sitio to become a separate barangay.
Led by Brgy. Captain Avelino Melendrez, around 1,241 registered residents, supported the petition. They believed that establishing their own barangay would bring various benefits and opportunities to the community. After careful consideration, a plebiscite was conducted to determine whether the separation would be approved.
The plebiscite resulted in unanimous support for the creation of a new barangay, with 567 residents in favor of the separation and only 14 residents voting against it. This overwhelming majority demonstrated the strong desire and unity among the community members to establish their own independent barangay.
Finally, on May 01, 1989, Barangay Sto. Niño officially became a barangay of San Vicente. In line with this milestone, the residents elected their own set of Barangay Officials, with Barangay Captain Victorio Oncepido taking the helm as the leader of the newly formed barangay.
Since its establishment, Barangay Sto. Niño has played an integral role in the local governance and development of San Vicente Palawan. The creation of the barangay has provided residents with a platform to address their specific concerns and work towards the improvement of their community. The barangay officials, including Barangay Captain Victorio Oncepido, have been entrusted with the responsibility of representing the interests and welfare of the people of Sto. Niño.
